1893 – The Washington National Cathedral is chartered by Congress. The charter is signed by President Benjamin Harrison.

1914 – Stock brokerage firm Merrill Lynch founded.

1927 – United States Marines return to Nicaragua.

1930 – First diesel engine automobile trip completed in a Packard sedan.

1941 – President Franklin Roosevelt makes his “Four Freedoms” speech (freedom of speech and worship; freedom from want and fear) during his State of the Union address.

1942 – Pan American Airlines becomes the first commercial airline to schedule a flight around the world (“Pacific Clipper”).

1951 – Indianapolis Olympians beat Rochester Royals 75-73 in NBA-record 6 overtimes. It’s the longest game in NBA history.

1957 – Elvis Presley makes his 7th and final appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”

1963 – “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” with Marlin Perkins begins on NBC.

1968 – Surveyor 7 (last of series) launched by US for soft-landing on Moon.

1972 – US Figure Skating women’s championship won by Janet Lynn.

1974 – In response to the 1973 energy crisis, daylight saving time commences nearly four months early in the United States.

1976 – Ted Turner purchases the Atlanta Braves for reported $12 million.

1985 – AFC Championship, Miami Orange Bowl: Miami Dolphins beat Pittsburgh Steelers 45-28.

1992 – The US Government urges doctors to stop using silicone breast implants, outlining the health effects.

1999 – An agreement is reached by the NBA and the players union to end a 204-day lockout which shortened the season by 50 games.

2005 – Mississippi Civil Rights Workers Murders: Edgar Ray Killen is arrested as a suspect for the 1964 murders of three Civil Rights workers.

2015 – Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz and Craig Biggio are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

2018 – Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota scores a touchdown off his own pass in a 22-21 victory over Kansas City Chiefs. He’s the second NFL quarterback to do so.

2021 – Supporters of President Donald Trump storm the capitol in Washington during congressional certification of the election win by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, resulting in five deaths and prompting evacuation of lawmakers and Vice President Mike Pence.
