1909 – Construction of a US Navy base begins at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

1911 – Many cities in the Midwest broke their record highs and lows on the same day as a strong cold front rolls through.

1918 – WWI Armistice signed by the Allies and Germany comes into effect and World War I hostilities end at 11 a.m. “The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.”

1921 – President Warren G. Harding dedicates Tomb of Unknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery.

1926 – Route 66 is established from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California, a distance of 2,448 miles.

1930 – Patent number US1781541 is awarded to Albert Einstein and Leo Sziard for their invention of the Einstein refrigerator.

1939 – Kate Smith first sings Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America.”

1943 – US air raid on Rabaul, Papua New Guinea.

1946 – New York Knicks play their first Basketball Association of America (BAA) home game at Madison Square Garden, losing 78-68 to Chicago Stags in overtime.

1957 – Sun Records release single “Great Balls of Fire” by Jerry Lee Lewis. The song sells a million copies in first ten days.

1963 – Brian Epstein and Ed Sullivan sign a 3 show contract for appearance by The Beatles.

1970 – Baltimore Orioles Boog Powell wins American League Most Valuable Player.

1972 – Dow Jones Index moves above 1,000 for first time.

1981 – Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Fernando Valenzuela becomes first Major League Baseball rookie to win Cy Young Award. Milwaukee Brewers’ Rollie Fingers takes American League award.

1982 – 5th NASA Space Shuttle Mission: Columbia makes the first officially “operational” shuttle mission.

1994 – Progress M-25 launched to space station Mir.

2008 – Taylor Swift releases her second studio album “Fearless” (Billboard Album of the Year, 2009; Grammy Album of the Year, 2010, American Music Awards, 2009)

2014 – The captain of the South Korean ferry which sank in April is found guilty of gross negligence and sentenced to 36 years in prison.

2017 – Largest singles day sales ever – Alibaba says its sales alone were $25.3 billion.

2022 – Crypto currency FTX, founded by Sam Bankman-Fried, files for bankruptcy, amid accusations of financial mismanagement and criminal conduct.
