1888 – St Andrews Golf Club in Yonkers, New York opens with just 6 holes.

1896 – Power plant at Niagara Falls begins operation.

1908 – Albert Einstein presents his quantum theory of light.

1910 – First airplane flight from deck of a ship in Norfolk, Virginia.

1935 – President Franklin Roosevelt proclaims Philippine Island a free commonwealth.

1942 – November 15th … Japanese vs. US sea battle at Savo-Island in Guadalcanal.

1943 – Chicago Bears quarterback Sid Luckman passes for 7 touchdowns vs New York Giants in 56-7 win.

1957 – Dick Hutton beats Lou Thesz in Toronto to become National Wrestling Alliance champion.

1957 – Milwaukee Braves’ Hank Aaron wins National League Most Valuable Player.

1960 – New Orleans elementary schools begin desegregation under order from U.S. Circuit Judge J. Shelly Wright. The McDonogh Three Leona Tate and Tessie Prevost join McDonogh 19 Elementary School and Ruby Bridges joins William Frantz Elementary School. They were met with death threats and racial slurs while the schools faced immediate boycotts.

1964 – Lionel Bart’s musical “Oliver!”, based on Charles Dickens’ 1938 “Oliver Twist”, and featuring Clive Revil, Danny Sewell, and Davy Jones, closes at Imperial Theater in New York City after 774 performances and three Tony awards wins.

1969 – Apollo 12 (Pete Conrad/Richard Gordon/Alan Bean) launched for second manned Moon landing.

1972 – Dow Jones closes above 1,000 for first time (1003.16)

1981 – Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant ties Amos Stagg with 314 college football wins.
