1868 – “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott is published in America by Roberts Brothers of Boston.

1885 – Special delivery mail service begins in the US.

1903 – First baseball World Series game. Pittsburgh Pirates beat Boston Americans 7-3 at Huntington Avenue; Jimmy Sebring hits first home run; Deacon Phillippe is winning pitcher and Cy Young the loser.

1907 – A downturn in the stock market leads to a run on the dollar. President Theodore Roosevelt later calls on financier J.P. Morgan to help manage the financial crisis.

1908 – Henry Ford introduces the Model T car (costs $825)

1961 – New York Yankees right fielder Roger Maris becomes Major League Baseball’s all-time single-season home run leader when he passes Babe Ruth’s mark with No. 61 off Boston rookie Tracy Stallard in 1-0 win at Yankee Stadium.

1964 – WWAY-TV channel 3 in Wilmington, NC (ABC) begins broadcasting.

1971 – Walt Disney World opens in Bay Lake, Florida.

1984 – Gary Trudeau’s Doonesbury comic strip resumes after a 2-year hiatus.

1994 – NHL owners begin lockout of players lasting 103 days; season shortened to 48 games instead of 84; players seek collective bargaining and owners a salary cap.

2000 – The United States wins the most medals (97), and the most gold medals (40) in the Summer Olympics held in Sydney, Australia.

2013 – A partial federal government shutdown occurs as a result of political disagreements over operational spending.

2017 – Stephen Paddock shoots dead 58 people, injuring 489, at a concert in Las Vegas in the deadliest mass shooting in American history.

2021 – US COVID-19 death toll passes 700,000, with daily deaths averaging 1,900 a day.
