1897 – New York Sun ran the famous “Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus” editorial.

1922 – President Warren G. Harding signs a joint resolution of approval to establish a Jewish homeland in Palestine.

1928 – “My Weekly Reader” magazine made its debut.

1934 – St. Louis Cardinals pitching Dean brothers shut out Brooklyn Dodgers in a doubleheader; Dizzy in a 13-0 rout and Paul with a 3-0 no-hitter.

1938 – The Great Hurricane of 1938 makes landfall on Long Island in New York. The death toll is estimated at 500-700 people.

1948 – Milton Berle becomes the permanent host on NBC’s TV show “Texaco Star Theater”

1952 – Major League Baseball’s Boston Braves play what turns out to be their last home game at Braves Field in Boston, losing to the Brooklyn Dodgers 8-2 before a crowd of 8,822. The team relocated to Milwaukee before the start of next season.

1955 – In his last fight, undefeated world heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Marciano knocks out light heavyweight Archie Moore in the 9th round at Yankee Stadium in New York City.

1957 – “Perry Mason” TV series based on character by author Erie Stanley Gardner, starring Raymond Burr, premieres on CBS-TV.

1961 – Maiden flight of the CH-47 Chinook military transport helicopter.

1969 – New York Jets Steve O’Neal punts 98 yards against Denver Broncos.

1970 – “Monday Night Football” created by Roone Arledge, premieres on ABC – Browns 31, Jets 21.

1980 – Richard Todd of the New York Jets completes 42 passes in a game (NFL record)

1985 – CIA case officer Edward Lee Howard flees to Russia after being identified as a KGB agent.

1990 – Pittsburgh Pirates’ Bobby Bonds is 2nd to hit 30 home runs and steal 50 bases in a season (so he can play in 6 decades) because of a publicity stunt.

1998 – TV comedy “Will & Grace” starring Eric McCormack and Debra Messing premieres.

2008 – Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, the two last remaining independent investment banks on Wall Street, become bank holding companies as a result of the subprime mortgage crisis.

2016 – Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan pledge $3 billion to medical research to “cure, prevent or manage all diseases by the end of the century.”

2021 – McDonald’s announces plans to “drastically” reduce plastic in its Happy Meals by 2025 (these meals make it one of the largest toy distributors in the world.)

2022 – New York Attorney General Letitia James files lawsuit against Donald Trump and three of his children, alleging widespread fraud through inflating his personal net worth by billions of dollars.
