1716 – 1st lighthouse in American colonies lit (Boston Harbor)

1814 – Francis Scott Key inspired to write the poem “Defence of Fort M’Henry”, later becomes lyrics of the Star-Spangled Banner.”

1848 – Alexander Stewart opens 1st US department store.

1872 – Britain pays US$15 1/2M for damages during Civil War.

1886 – George K. Anderson of Memphis, Tennessee patents typewriter ribbon.

1901 – Theodore Roosevelt is sworn in as President, the youngest man to serve as US President, after William McKinley finally dies after an anarchist shoots him in Buffalo.

1933 – 2 billion board feet of lumber destroyed in Tillamook, Oregon fire.

1940 – Congress passes 1st peace-time conscription bill (draft law).

1948 – Milton Berle starts his TV career on Texaco Star Theater.

1958 – Yankees win 24th pennant, & 9th under Casey Stengel.

1964 – Walt Disney awarded Medal of Freedom at White House.

1968 – 1st broadcast of “60 Minutes” on CBS-TV.

1972 – “Waltons” TV program premieres.

1978 – Braves’ Jim Bouton, 38, beats Giants, his 1st win since 1970.

1985 – “The Golden Girls”, starring Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty, debuts on NBC.

1992 – 1st subway car completed to be exported from US (to Taiwan).

1998 – Telecommunications companies MCI Communications and WorldCom complete their $37 billion merger to form MCI WorldCom.

2001 – Historic National Prayer Service held at Washington National Cathedral for victims of the September 11 attacks.  A similar service is held in Canada on Parliament Hill, the largest vigil ever held in the nation’s capital.

2014 – The United States defeats Serbia 129-92 to win the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

2015 – 14 year old Texan Ahmed Mohamed arrested at school when home-made clock assumed to be a bomb – Mark Zuckerberg and US President Barack Obama send supportive tweets.
