RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast.
Back to School Supplies
Last week, Transportation Secretary Eric Boyette was greeted with cheers as he visited a Robeson County school to help deliver about a dozen boxes of school supplies.
The supplies, which were donated by NCDOT employees in Wake and Robeson counties, were delivered to Townsend Elementary in Maxton, as part of Governor Cooper’s annual School Supply Drive.
“It may be small, but it’s something that means a lot to this school and this community,” Boyette said at the event.
Also in attendance during the event were Board of Transportation member Grady Hunt, engineers from NCDOT’s highway Division 6, and staff from Raleigh.
Fall Litter Sweep
NCDOT crews, contractors and volunteers have picked up 7.8 million pounds of litter since the year began, and we’re looking to keep that momentum going.
From Sept.10-24, the Fall Litter Sweep will see volunteers as well as NCDOT crews out on roadways doing their part to keep North Carolina beautiful.
Volunteers can contact their local NCDOT maintenance offices during the litter sweep for gloves, vests and trash bags to aid in the cleanup effort. Once their cleanup is finished, volunteers should leave their filled trash bags along the roadside and alert their local maintenance office, so NCDOT crews can swing by and pick up the trash bags.

Everyone can do their part by always:
- Securing your vehicle’s load before driving; and
- Holding on to trash until it can be disposed of properly.
Passenger Ferry Season Extended
Finally, due to popular demand, the Ocracoke passenger ferry, the Ocracoke Express, is extending its operating season through Sept. 30.
Since the season began, more than 21,000 have ridden the ferry, which takes riders on a 70-minute trip between Hatteras and Ocracoke Village.
