RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast.

NCDMV Appointment Confirmations

One-third of people with an appointment are not showing up at the DMV. To combat this, the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is now requiring confirmation for all scheduled appointments. Now, when appointments are reserved online at SkipTheLine.ncdot.gov, customers will immediately receive a text message and email with a confirmation link. They will need to confirm their appointment by clicking either link within 15 minutes, or the appointment will be canceled.

Upon confirming their appointment, customers will receive another text and email notification letting them know the appointment was successfully confirmed. Four days before the appointment, customers will receive a reminder text and email with a confirmation link. This time, customers will have 24 hours to click the link to confirm their appointment. Once confirmed, another email and text will be generated confirming the appointment.

Volunteer Firefighters

When not working full-time to keep our roadways safe, dozens of NCDOT employees in our western counties serve their communities as volunteer firefighters. Whether it’s rescuing someone’s dog or responding to a structural fire, they are there to help their neighbors in a time of need.

National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Law enforcement officers nationwide are conducting a high-visibility enforcement campaign titled “Put the Phone Away or Pay” which runs now through April 8. Distracted driving comes in many forms, but cell phone use while driving has become the most prevalent. Texting while driving is illegal in North Carolina and a violation of this law could result in a fine. Do your part by putting away your phone until you’ve safely arrived at your destination.
