Each year, American Education Week is recognized the week before Thanksgiving. This year, it falls on November 15 through November 19. There is a different theme for each day of American Education Week, but one thing remains throughout the week: the celebration of education.

During Education Week, everyone who contributes to education is honored — from teachers to parents, bus drivers to cafeteria workers, principals to guidance counselors, and beyond. Without each important role being filled, public education is missing a vital piece.

Listed below are the themes for each day of American Education Week:

  • Monday, November 15: Kick Off Day
  • Tuesday, November 16: Family Day
  • Wednesday, November 17: Education Support Professionals Day
  • Thursday, November 18: Educator for a Day
  • Friday, November 19: Substitute Educators Day

American Education Week promotes communication between parents, teachers, and students, celebrates the growth of education, promotes public schools, and encourages community involvement in education.

Education is vital to everyone, no matter the age. However, the education of a young student can help form the path for the rest of their life, so education week focuses on the importance of youth education. Current students will be the doctors, teachers, architects, artists, repairmen, police officers, and leaders of the future.

How to Celebrate (from National Day Calendar):

  • Learn what events your schools are hosting. Visit your child’s classroom and participate in the activities.

  • Find out where your child’s educational system is headed. Learn how you can be a part of their goals.

  • Dive into the technologies educators use to teach and inspire.

  • Attend presentations.

  • Honor those who’ve advanced education in your community.

  • Get involved in your school. Fostering a network of support improves education for everyone.

  • Schools, share your events and projects. Invite parents and guardians to attend. Welcome them to the celebration.

This week and every week, we should appreciate education and its role in our lives and the world around us.

“Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela
