Bladen County professional golfer Kayla Thompson had a good payday in Trophy City, Texas, tying for 12th place and earning $1,360 in the Kathy Whitworth Championship.

Thompson put together a stellar 18 holes during Saturday’s final round on the Whitworth Course at Trophy Club Country Club with 16 pars and two birdies to score 2-under 70. Only four players broke 70 during Saturday’s play on the 6,464-yard layout.

Thompson shot 70-75-70-70=285 and tied with Claire Vermette of St. Petersburg, Florida and Greta Bruner of The Woodlands, Texas for 12th in the Annika Women’s All Pro Tour tournament.

Thompson began Saturday’s final round tied for 16th at 1 under par. A birdie on the par-5, 557-yard fourth hole moved her to 2-under and tied for 13th. She moved to 3-under for the tournament with a birdie on the 393-yard 16th hole.

Thompson’s 51 pars in 72 holes tied for ninth-most during the tournament. She tied for eighth on par 4 scoring with a 4.0 average and her 34.8 scoring average on the front nine tied for seventh best in the event.

Mary Parsons of British Columbia, Canada shot even-par 72 Saturday and won the tournament by six strokes over Camille Boyd of Yorba Linda, California and Jacqueline Lucena of Gainsville, Florida.

Thompson’s next tournament will be The Heritage Classic at Rolling Hills Country Club in Wichita, Kansas on August 1-4. This is the WAPT tournament with a purse of $100,000.

Thompson lives in Clarkton and graduated from West Bladen High School.
