Thoughts While Shaving

Springtime is a wonderful time of the year.  April weather is a little unsettled, but better than March and not nearly as hot as coming months.  It’s a time for new beginnings.  See farmers in the field, preparing the soil, planting seeds and shortly a new crop will spring forward.

I watch and listen to the news, and there is lots of it, good and bad now.  And, occasionally I will do a little research, just to satisfy my mind.  I refrain from listening to or making political statements, spend most of my adult life  involved one way or the other, including 8 years as a local elected official and 25 years as an employee of a non-partisan organization.  But rather than engage in the rhetoric, I research issues, probably in all the wrong places.

Recently, there has been much said about the postal service and charges to Amazon, no idea what they pay the postal service.  Began to sort through the bulk mailings that we all receive daily and I am of the opinion that those of us who still pay 49 cents to mail a letter are the only customers of the post office that pays the full price.

Yesterday, there was a HughesNet mailing that did not disclose the price they paid to mail, just said bulk rate, another was HayNeedle, bulk rate and often we receive a handful of ‘slick’ advertising that, most of the time, goes directly to the trash can, all marked bulk rate.

Upon further investigation, I determined that the IRS, Ag related mailings, Educational, Fraternal, Labor, Philanthropic, Religious, Scientific, Veterans related and some political committees, according to the Postal website are eligible for discounted mailing.

Not eligible is certain Business groups, Chamber of Commerce, Social & Hobby Clubs and certain Political Organizations, as well as others.  Who determines who does and does not get discounted US Mail Service delivery, especially for political mailings, that are listed in both categories on the Postal Service website?

I have determined that most mail I receive are in the same category as robo calls, mostly unwanted, unneeded and aggravating and do little for the betterment of mankind, and the biggest difference is the mailings fill up the trash bins.  But, must be effective for some or they would not continue to use the service.  Didn’t just get that way, same as it has been for years.  Go Figure!

And, it gave this senior citizen something to do and to complain about.  (SMILE)  Life is good if the service of the US Postal Service is all I have to moan and groan about and still have the service available for 49 cents per mailing, even if I am in the category of those paying full price.

The United States Postal Service is the world’s most efficient postal system.  Diane Watson

The federal government spends millions to run the Postal Service.  I could lose your mail for half of that.  Pat Paulsen

The Postal Service provides a very valuable service to our nation, we are fortunate to have it and it should be preserved forever.  rgh
