Thoughts While ShavingA busy weekend is just ahead!  It’s time for the 40th Annual White Lake Water Festival.  It kicks off with a golf tournament Friday, music Friday evening,  The annual parade begins at 10 AM Saturday and a wide range of activities throughout the afternoon and evening.  Google White Lake Water Festival or E-town White Lake Chamber of Commerce or better yet, check events page on BladenOnline for details.

And, White Lake officials have given a green light to swimming and boating, all fun things associated with White Lake.

Rainfall totals at the official weather station at Curt Brown Airport total about 3/4 of an inch over the past 2 or 3 days.  At the unofficial weather station at the Hester household, 1 inch as of dark-thirty Wednesday.

Crops are looking good in Bladen.  Strawberry patch busy, blueberries crop could be one of the best in years, according to NC Department of Agriculture and corn crop appears to be off to a good start.

Thinking back, comparing row crops over the years.  40, 50, 60 years ago planting was done with a one row planter behind a mule or horse.  Would take days to plant a few acres, compared with 8, 10 or more rows planted today with one tractor, hundreds of acres in a week.  Seldom see a horse or mule today.  Some folks kept them around for a while to til the garden, but they have been replaced, occasionally see one grazing in a pasture.

The mule went the way of the country store where all the smart folks second-guessed the government and their neighbors about most every thing.  No air conditioning, a hand held fan from the funeral home or the furniture store, a huge chest type icebox, with an opener on the side, stocked with Pepsi, Coke, RC Cola, Orange Crush, Grape Aid, a few 7UPs, maybe another brand or two.  Moon pies, and a few other sweets and lots of hot air and some local knowledge, and all sharing a few straight chairs, or a coke crate, all talking at the same time.  Oh yes, you could purchase gasoline that you pumped up, by hand before putting in your vehicle, but few purchased over a dollars worth, about 4 or 5 gallons.  Those were good ole days.  Heck, you could make a dollar an hour, $40 dollars for a weeks work at most places, except in the tobacco patch…30, 40, maybe 50 cents an hour to crop tobacco or work at the barn.

Sorry, just thinking out loud.

Congratulations to the Brunswick CC baseball team.  There are participating in the national championship series in Oklahoma.  One of the stars is former East Bladen Eagle, Kyle Tatum.
