Thoughts While ShavingWe were pleasantly surprised last night when BladenOnline broke the news that Dr. Morgan Hester, soon to be Clark, would be the new dentist in the area … Dr. Dave Allen, long time dentist, is retiring and Dr. Clark (Hester) will be serving the area from the same location. A busy time for her. She will be married to her long time friend, Will Clark of Elizabethtown, a week from today … The ECU Dental graduate is busy … preparing for a wedding, a move to the area, and a new location to continue her practice. She is moving from Goldsboro, where she provided dental care for some time … I may have provided more info than I should … but her proud parents are Rick and Caroline Hester of Smithfield (both former Bladen County residents) and grandparents are Glenn and Betty Jo Cain of Bladenboro and Sarah and Robert G. Hester of Elizabethtown…

Dr. Allen has earned his retirement … Can you imagine the number of individuals he has served practicing his profession? A much deserved retirement for a servant of the area … Welcome Dr. Morgan Hester – soon to be Clark – to Bladen County…

Let me explain … we were surprised by the timing … We were aware of Dr. Allen’s upcoming retirement and who his replacement would be … but not sure when an announcement would be made…

Congratulations to our long time neighbor and friend Mildred Simmons. She was recently honored as Bladen County Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year … And she earned it … years and years and hours and hours of volunteering at the hospital … I may not have the proper title … but close enough…

Recently there was a news briefing related to new activities at the local airport … PLEASE check an article on BOL related to the announcement … “Aviation Camps are now set in June at Elizabethtown Airport” for those interested in more info … News that can change lives for young and old alike who are interested in aviation as a career or something less … maybe a hobby…

Have recently seen reminders of the date for this year’s Bladen County Relay for Life at Elizabethtown Middle School Athletic Field … Saturday, April 29 (a week from today) from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. It’s a fundraiser … a fun time with neighbors and friends from across the county. I remember, years ago … spending all night long, attempting to sleep on the ground … Volunteers were on the track all night long (very few about 3 a.m.) … the event in recent years shortened … but still fun, and for a good cause … Google for more info…

Speaking of events from long ago … How about the Rescue Squad Telethon? It was much needed and well supported by residents countywide…

Another event I always enjoyed was fundraisers (reverse raffles) for high school athletics and Little League … Some have gone by the wayside, some continue and I aged out.

All remind me of the Jaycee Creed I believe in, a portion below…

We believe: That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations. That economic justice can best be won by free men (and women) through free enterprise…
