Thoughts While ShavingNow nearly a week deep in a new year, time to pause and assess, or reassess. Some time for self…

47 degrees at 4:30 a.m. Today’s weather forecast … Sunny, with a high near 60 … Tonight, clear, with a low around 35 … More of the same Saturday, sunny, with a high near 58. A slight chance of rain Sunday and Sunday night … Then back to the same, Monday thru Thursday of next week…

For NFL fans, 24-year-old Damar Hamlin, of NFL fame … apparently is doing some better … first question … “Did we win?” His physician, Dr. Timothy Pritts, said he told him yes … “You won the game of life.” He suffered cardiac arrest after a hit in the Monday night NFL game … Still a ways to go, but the signs are apparently positive … Hamlin has a fund he promotes raising $s for youngsters in his area … Usually in the upper teens or low $20,000 range or less … Up to $7 million now, and climbing … Children in his neighborhood will be the winners…

Remember as a youth, living just about any area of rural Bladen County … When the temp dropped below freezing, mom would make sure there was water in the bucket for drinking, and a bath was ‘hitting’ the high places … whatever that meant … Bottom line, getting bye til a better day…

Remember making corn meal … made out of corn … It was so good … and helped us appreciate a bag of flour occasionally…

And, my granddad Hester never owned a vehicle that I am aware of … Walk 2 or 3 miles to town, and bring back all his necessities in an onion or cabbage bag over his shoulder … One was an orange color and the cabbage bag was green … Seldom heard him complain about anything … quiet, respected individual … Adron Kingsberry Hester … Have heard folks say, when Kingsberry prayed for rain, better have your umbrella … That was maybe a stretch, but he was a good granddad and a good man … Set a good example…
