So much going on in our area and across the nation and much of the positive info is being ‘drowned out’ by bad news … near and far … China government apparently ‘pushing back’ against many who apparently prefer another form of government, concerns about US elections, runoff’s in areas of the USA, most notably who will control the US Congress … I know very little about any of those topics.
Today, I want to share a little about communications in Bladen, Sampson and small portions of other area counties … Pender, Columbus, Robeson, maybe a small area of Duplin … Areas served by Star Telephone … At Star TMC, today is the last day as CEO for Jeff Nethercutt. Tomorrow, a new leader begins … Donna Bullard will be the new CEO. She has been with Star for 20, maybe 25 years … Mr. Nethercutt is retiring…
So why is that important? Star Telephone is going thru a big time update … moving to fiber as quickly as possible … Will not happen overnight … about 60% of the service area has been updated, and hopefully it will be near 100% in 2 or 3 years … Federal and state government officials understand the importance of better internet service to all consumers and are spending big bucks to upgrade … much of the local on Mr. Nethercutt’s watch … and hopefully the balance soon on Ms. Bullard’s. Did you know, Star TMC averages less than 10 consumers per mile … in fact about half that … You can travel miles in our area without seeing a house or building of any kind … I know that is not the norm … but not unusual…
Mr. Nethercutt departs with a promise of more money coming to complete the project, and we all wanted it yesterday, but it will be tomorrow, maybe next year or over another year or two, but it’s coming … thanks to Mr. Nethercutt, Lymon Horne, Mickey Tew, those who came before…
