Former UNC basketball great Walter Davis, a Pineville, N.C. native, died Thursday morning at the age of 69. Family members said he died of natural causes. Former player and now UNC coach Phil Ford said, “He was the first guy that was much taller than me and quicker than me and faster than me. He was a great, great player.” He finished his UNC career with 1,863 points, 670 rebounds and 409 assists. Friends said he had been battling health issues.
Met a couple of long-time friends recently, near Raleigh, former NC State Department of Revenue employees(?) who worked with counties dealing with tax issues … example … revaluation, etc. Had not seen each other for the past nearly 20 years, conversation was like it was yesterday … Hope to get together again soon. My association was when I was employed by the NC Association of County Commissioners … Think we surprised each other at special times we remembered when our paths crossed on work issues…
Along the way … saw a field of collards, many, many acres of collards … guess someone preparing for a Thanksgiving feast. Traveled thru one town … people-like individuals, some ‘decked out in overalls and checkered long sleeve shirts,’ and other such outfits appeared to be real folks on some corners … maybe ‘stuffed with’ with some type ‘filler material’ … felt like I should stop and speak … but I did not.
Also saw folks along the way on foot, on a cold day, no effort seeking (thumbing) a ride … I felt guilty passing them by … frankly, I am concerned about offering rides to folks today, unless I know them … Never know who or when to. Hear so many tales of folks with a weapon … Maybe I am the only one who has those thoughts…
Checking weather … Sunny today, with a high near 74. Calm wind becoming northeast around 6 mph. Mostly clear tonight, with a low around 40. Saturday and Sunday (Church Day) … Sunny, with a high near 72. Still no mention of rain over the next week or so.
High school football (playoffs) tonight … North Edgecombe at East Bladen … game time 7 p.m.
