Hurricane Lee strengthened to a Category 5 storm late last night (Thursday), and forecasters said it could present potentially dangerous beach conditions on the U.S. East Coast as early as this Sunday. Maximum sustained winds of 160 mph. Lee was traveling northwest across open water on a path that will likely see its center pass north of the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico, according to the National Weather Service.

Earlier on Thursday, Lee roared to major hurricane status, with its maximum sustained winds increasing from 105 mph at 11 a.m. to 130 mph at 5 p.m… All on the same day that it developed a well-defined eye…..
