WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) congratulated Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune for receiving verification as a Level III Trauma Center. The announcement from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) comes in the wake of Senator Tillis hosting a roundtable in Jacksonville, NC in May 2017, where he brought together regional civilian trauma leaders and Camp Lejeune medical leaders with the goal of becoming a Trauma Center. At that same roundtable, Senator Tillis was pleased to announce that “Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune” was becoming “Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune,” a major step to receiving the Trauma Center designation.
Since the announcement, the medical center designation has paved the way for a joint military-civilian trauma system that provides trauma care for DOD beneficiaries, veterans, and civilians. The Level III verification represents a major step forward in providing trauma care to the Eastern NC region and an opportunity for the Naval Medical Corpsmen at Camp Lejeune to provide trauma care to the community, thereby increasing readiness and ensuring that the first real “trauma event” a Corpsman experiences is not in combat.
Additionally, Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune was given zero negative findings during its inspections, a rarity in the industry and a sign of the high quality of care.
“Just last year, I had the honor of announcing that Camp Lejeune’s Naval Hospital would be upgraded to a medical center, which paved the way to receive designation as a high level trauma center. Since then, Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune has made incredible progress in providing trauma care for residents of Eastern North Carolina and training services for military medics,” said Senator Tillis. “The verification as a level III trauma center is an incredible achievement and a testament to the Navy’s commitment to world-class trauma care and the life-saving work being done by medical professionals at Camp Lejeune.”
