WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, attended a committee hearing on the Administration’s decision to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and urged his colleagues to pass a solution for the DACA population. Last month, Senators Tillis, Lankford, and Hatch introduced the SUCCEED Act, a commonsense and merit-based solution for undocumented children to earn legal status if they work hard, follow the law, and pay their taxes.
Tillis on pairing DACA solution with border security:
“What we really need is White House leadership on exactly what the six month timeline that the President has placed on Congress to do our jobs looks like. I, for one, hope it is an articulate, compassionate, firm response to provide certainty to the DACA population and a reasonable, sustainable, fiscally sound border security strategy. That seems to me to be a good step in the right direction after 30 years of failure of immigration reform in this country.”
Tillis on need for Congress to find solution for DACA recipients:
“We should be very clear that those who have significant misdemeanors or felonies will not receive any treatment in the solution we come up with because they disobeyed our laws when we gave them an opportunity to be here. For the vast majority of the DACA population we need to stop talking about it and solve it. There are great proposals where we can get together and provide a solution, but it is a disservice to this population when we know what the problem is, we know what a reasonable solution is, and we don’t provide it.”
Tillis on DACA population in distressed areas:
“DACA recipients that are in distressed areas like Texas, Florida, or Puerto Rico need a reasonable response because due to Congress’ inaction we have put them in an untenable position, so it should be on Congress to make this as smooth as possible.”
