The Town of Elizabethtown has been awarded a $100,000 grant through Duke Energy’s Water Resources Fund to be used for improvements at Tory Hole Park. The grant will be used for construction of a River Boardwalk Trail, new swings at River Overlook and for design, planning and construction management.

The Water Resources Fund was established in 2014 in keeping with Duke Energy’s commitment to protecting, improving and restoring waterways in the Carolinas, promoting environmental education and conservation, being good stewards of the environment and good neighbors in the communities that Duke Energy serves.

The Town of Elizabethtown is one of 12 organizations across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia to collectively receive more than $770,000  from the fund during the fourth grant announcement. Town Manager Eddie Madden accepted the award on Dec. 13 at an event in Belmont, North Carolina.

Upon receiving the grant, Madden stated, “The Town is very excited about receiving this grant from Duke Energy. A historic battle at Tory Hole Park led to the formation of Elizabethtown, and the Town will use the grant funding in the redevelopment and preservation of the park.”

This project will create greater access for residents and visitors to the park and improve awareness of the area’s natural resources. The improvements will provide an outdoor classroom that can serve as a setting for history, nature and environmental programs for the park and nearby schools. The new river boardwalk will provide access to the Cape Fear River that doesn’t exist today within the park.
