During the Monday evening meeting of the Elizabethtown Town Council, Council members approved a resolution recognizing November 11-15 as “Hire a Vet Week”. Mayor Slyvia Campbell presented a copy of the resolution to Ann Garrett of the NC Works office. Campbell stated “Veterans represent a strong and productive part of the the state’s work force and they deserve an opportunity to pursue quality employment with competitive wages.”
Every November the Town declares the second week of November as “Youth Appreciation Week” on behalf of the Elizabethtown Optimist Club. Mayor Campbell thanked the Club for “recognizing local youth for their efforts in the arts, athletics, academics and community service work.” Councilman Ricky Leinwand also reminded those in attendance that the Club would hold their annual Christmas Tree Sales beginning the week of Thanksgiving to help fund all of their Youth projects.
In other business, Council approved an ordinance to obligate $700,000 from the water account fund balance to ensure that the required funds would be available to properly maintain the Town water tanks. In addition, Council obligated $100,000 annually to build up the fund over time so that future work can take place.
A resolution was approved directing the Town Clerk to investigate petitions received for annexation of Bladen Community Services LLC, Bladen County Detention & Law Enforecement Center and all other county-owned properties on Smith Circle. The Town also passed a resolution stating the intent of the Town to annex properties owned by the Town contiguous to the the existing municipal boundaries. These properties include Greene’s Lake and Conservation Park; Town of Elizabethtown/Rudy M. Potter property; Town of Elizabethtown/ER Properties of NC Inc.; Town of Elizabethtown/Gordon Kinlaw Property (Gibson Dairy); Town of Elizabethtown/Marilyn Jordan Property (Gibson Dairy); Town of Elizabethtown/John McGavock Property (Gibson Dairy); property acquired from Mary K. Greene at Industrial Park (32.96 acres); and Well Site #4 on Smith Circle. A public hearing will be conducted on these proposed annexation properties on November 18 at 1 p.m.
In administrative matters, Council approved proposal for repair of Fire Department Roof; approved Memorandum of Understanding between the Town and the Elizabethtoiwn-White Lake Chamber of Commerce as related to the Director position and related duties; and approved a budget amendment and the monthly financial report.
The 13th Annual Bladen County Veterans’ Day Ceremony will be held Thursday, November 7 at 11 a.m. at the Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall.
In observance of Veterans’ Day, the Town offices will be closed on Monday, November 11; and for Thanksgiving on November 28 and 29.
The Elizabethtown Christmas Parade is scheduled for Sunday, December 1 at 3 p.m.Share:
