A Staff Report

To stay safe as temperatures soar during the summer, it’s crucial for North Carolinians to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Prolonged exposure to high heat can lead to dehydration, overheating, and even fatalities.

Parents must never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as car interiors can quickly become dangerously hot. Look out for symptoms like muscle cramps, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, fainting, headaches, nausea, and vomiting, which may indicate heat-related illness.

If you or someone you know experiences such symptoms, move to a cool area, drink water, apply cold cloths to the body, and seek medical assistance.

In case of a heating or cooling crisis, individuals and families can seek cooling assistance through the Crisis Intervention Program. Older adults and adults with disabilities can also benefit from Operation Fan Heat Relief.

To obtain more information on preventing heat-related illnesses, access additional data, or sign up for a weekly heat report specific to North Carolina, please visit the NCDHHS website. Your well-being is our priority, and we encourage everyone to stay informed and take necessary measures to beat the heat safely.
