Wake County, North Carolina- Wake County Schools, the state’s largest school district, will swear in Dr. Robert Taylor as its new superintendent today, marking a significant moment in the district’s education leadership. Dr. Taylor, a seasoned educator with a wealth of experience, takes the helm of the Wake County Public School System, stepping into the role vacated by former Superintendent Catty Moore, who retired on June 30.

According to reports, Dr. Taylor’s appointment received unanimous approval from the Wake County Board of Education during a meeting on Tuesday, with an 8-1 vote. While the majority of board members expressed enthusiasm for Dr. Taylor’s selection, one member did raise concerns about his salary package.

Dr. Taylor’s educational journey in North Carolina has been distinguished. He previously served as a deputy state superintendent of public instruction in 2021 and 2022 and spent a decade as the superintendent of Bladen County Schools. Before that, he held administrative roles in Clinton City School and Cumberland County Schools.

Returning to his home state of North Carolina, Dr. Taylor is set to assume his role as superintendent on October 1.

Dr. Taylor, a Mississippi native, and his wife have three grown children. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and earned his Master’s and doctoral degrees in education from Fayetteville State University.

According to records, in terms of compensation, Dr. Taylor will receive a base salary of $326,993, supplemented by additional pay for longevity and his doctoral degree, some of which will be covered by the state. He will also receive a monthly $1,100 transportation allowance for using his own vehicle for travel expenses.

Dr. Taylor’s tenure as superintendent comes at a crucial time for Wake County Schools, as he will oversee significant capital projects, educational challenges, and growth hurdles.
