A staff report

The National Weather Service of Wilmington has issued a concerning weather advisory for the region. According to their latest announcement, there is a significant chance of severe thunderstorms sweeping across the area this afternoon and into tonight. This alert has raised concerns over potential hazards and impacts on land and at sea. Here’s what you need to know about the impending weather conditions.

A robust storm system originating from the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes is currently on the move. It is projected to pass through the southeast of North Carolina and the northeast of South Carolina later today. This weather system will first usher in a warm front during the afternoon, followed by a cold front tonight. As the system progresses, it is expected to bring with it breezy conditions, featuring gusts of up to 45 mph in the afternoon and evening.

One of the most pressing concerns is the potential for severe storms. While the primary threat is damaging winds, with speeds exceeding 60 mph, there is also the possibility of tornadoes and large hail, measuring at least 1 inch in diameter. These severe weather conditions are most likely to manifest this evening but could persist until around 2 AM along the coastal areas.

The impact of these severe storms could be significant. Downed trees, power lines, and property damage are all plausible outcomes, making it imperative for residents to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions.

In addition to the severe storm warnings, other advisories have been issued. A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for minor tidal flooding along the lower Cape Fear River, which is expected to extend into Saturday morning. A High Surf Advisory has also been issued for the southeast coast of North Carolina, effective tonight and early Saturday.

For marine activities, a Gale Warning is in place for all nearby Atlantic waters, specifically for this afternoon and tonight.

Several rivers and creeks in the region are expected to experience minor flooding. Residents living in flood-prone areas should closely monitor river levels and be prepared for possible flooding.

In conclusion, the Wilmington area is under a weather alert due to the potential for severe thunderstorms, strong winds, and coastal flooding. Residents and mariners need to stay informed, exercise caution, and be prepared for adverse weather conditions as this storm system moves through the region.
