Flag Day is observed yearly on June 14th, yet many people remain unaware of its significance. So, the real question is, what is Flag Day? Flag Day is a day dedicated to honoring the American Flag.

The American Revolution, which began in 1775, did not see unified fighting under a single flag, as stated by history.com. Loc.gov states that in 1776, George Washington assigned Betsy Ross, a seamstress in Philadelphia, to create the first-ever American Flag. According to britannica.com, on June 14th, 1777, the Founding Fathers officially approved the first American Flag. Va.gov states that although the flag was approved on June 14th, it was not carried into battle for the first time until September 11th, 1777, during the Battle of Brandywine. Since the creation of the first flag in 1775, there have been 27 official versions. The current flag was designed in 1960 when Hawai’i became the 50th state to join the United States in 1959.

It was in 1916 that President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14th as the official day for the flag, naming it Flag Day in the process. In 1949, Congress officially designated June 14th as the official day.

Although Flag Day is not recognized as an official federal holiday, Pennsylvania celebrates the day as a state holiday.
