WHITEVILLE – South Columbus grabbed an early 11-2 lead then held on for a 15-10 victory over Bladen County Sunday night in the opening round of the Diamond Youth Baseball District 2 AAA (Minors) Tournament.

L.C. Council walked and stole a base to start the game. Jalin Ballard belted a single that scored Council. Ballard stole 3 bases including home to give Bladen a 2-0 lead.

South Columbus scored 11 runs in the next 2 innings on 7 hits, 4 walks and 4 errors. Bladen bounced back with 6 runs in the 3rd to close the gap to 11-8.

Javion Johnson was hit by a pitch, and Gregory McKiver and Council both walked. Ballard was hit by a pitch, and Memphis Smith’s fielder’s choice plated a run. C. J. Singletary smacked a single, and Johann Reed and Tristan Taylor drew walks. Gavin Richardson laced a single. Johnson, McKiver, Council, Ballard, Singletary and Reed all scored.

South scored 2 runs in both the 4th and 5th innings to pad their lead to 15-8. Singletary, Taylor, Aaron Bethea and Johnson all drew walks in the Bladen 6th inning, and Richardson was hit by a pitch. Singletary and Taylor scored runs to whittle the final margin to 15-10.

Council walked twice and scored twice. Ballard singled, was hit by a pitch and scored twice. Smith drove in a run. Singletary singled, walked and scored 2 runs. Reed singled, walked and scored a run. Taylor walked twice and scored a run. Richardson batted 2-for-2 and was hit by a pitch. Johnson was hit by a pitch, walked and scored a run. McKiver walked and scored.
