ELIZABETHTOWN – Whiteville edged East Bladen 15-13 in the third and deciding set Thursday night as the Lady Wolfpack jayvees won 2-1 in Three Rivers Conference jayvee volleyball action by set scores of 15-25, 25-18 and 15-13.
Freshman Cheylee Mathis took charge for the Lady Eagles in the first set with an 8-point service run that produced a 15-7 lead. Sophmore Abbie Cross won a pair of service points that kept the lead at 20-13.
Freshman Alyssa Futrell reeled off 3 straight service points to pad the lead to 24-14 and a side-out ended the set.
The teams battled on even terms in the second set until a 4-point service run put Whiteville up 15-8. Service points from freshman Kayleigh Raynor, Cross, Futrell and freshman Katie Evans kept East within 20-16 before another Whiteville service run claimed the set.
Sara Gargala fired in 4 straight service points to put East Bladen ahead 11-9 in the deciding set, but Whiteville bounced back to go up 14-11. Raynor rallied the Lady Eagles to within 14-13 with a pair of service points, before Whiteville won the match with a side-out.
Mathis led the Lady Eagles with 7 service points, 2 aces and 2 kills. Gargala filled the stat sheet with 3 kills, 3 service points, 2 blocks and an ace. Futrell knocked in 2 kills, 2 blocks, 3 service points and an ace.
Raynor finished with 3 service points, 2 kills and an ace. Cross hammered in 4 service points and 2 kills, and Adrienne Howell drilled in 3 aces and a kill.
