East Bladen Athletic Director Patty Evers has been honored with the Charlie Adams Distinguished Service Award. This is the 11th year that the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s Board of Directors has presented the award.

Adams served as the NCHSAA executive director from 1984 until his retirement in 2010. Under his leadership the organization implemented a four-year cycle of reclassification, expanded postseason playoffs, started corporate partnerships, and established an endowment fund to help insure the funding of athletic opportunities.

Recipients of the award must have worked 10 years in an educational or athletic career, still be active, be supportive of NCHSAA activities and go above and beyond the expectations for the position.

“I am very honored to receive an award named after Charlie Adams!” said Evers. “He did so much for student athletes and was always an advocate for coaches.”

Evers has been named the Coach of the Year in her conference 13 times and has won over 80 percent of her basketball games. A member of the 500 coaching wins club, Evers’ basketball teams have compiled a 458-86 record in her 19 years at East Bladen, and in her previous 5 years at Tar Heel, her Lady Panthers were 73-42.

When this award was announced, Tra Waters, the NCHSAA Assistant Commissioner of Sports and Championships, talked about Coach Evers work with Special Olympics. Her teams have helped with Special Olympics throughout her coaching career. “We started a DREAM Team here that does community service and tutors at the middle school,” noted Evers. “This award goes far beyond wins and losses.”

For 13 years Evers has taken student athletes to UNC-Pembroke to attend the Student Athlete Summer Institute sponsored by the NCHSAA. She has served on the NCHSAA Board of Directors for 4 years and is currently serving on the North Carolina Coaches Association Board of Directors.

East Bladen Assistant Principal Heather Thompson congratulated Coach Evers and said, “Coach Evers has served as a coach, mentor, volleyball official and helped form and lead the Dream Team Leaders at East Bladen. East Bladen is honored to have Coach Evers, and we look forward to her continuing her legacy.”

As East Bladen Athletic Director Evers oversees a program that fields 8 varsity boys teams and 7 varsity girls teams across 10 sports.

“It means a lot to be recognized not only for our basketball teams success but for being able to work with all student athletes,” concluded Evers.
