WHITEVILLE- Senior Kadance Hammonds drove in senior Chesney Reynolds with the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning as Whiteville edged East Bladen 5-4 in non-conference softball action Friday night.

Reynolds, junior Kloe Sellers and Hammonds connected for consecutive 2-out singles in the bottom of the ninth to produce the deciding run.

East Bladen left the bases loaded in both the 7th and 9th innings and stranded 11 baserunners in the game.

Freshman Martha Simmons ripped a double down the left field line to lead-off the game. Junior Karli Priest pounded a double into the left field corner to drive in Simmons. Priest advanced on a passed ball and scored on junior Emma Turbeville’s sacrifice fly to put East on top 2-0.

Senior Emma Hooks cracked a 1-out single in the Whiteville 3rd inning, and Tessa Nicholson legged out an infield hit. Freshman Madalyn Edge doubled home Hooks, Reynolds walked, and Hammonds cleaned the bases with a double that scored Nicholson, Hooks and Reynolds for a 4-2 Lady Wolfpack lead.

The Lady Eagles rallied in the 6th inning. Junior Laura Davisson drilled a double to right-center field, and Turbeville lashed a single to center field. Senior Mariah Smith’s fielder’s choice plated Davisson, and junior Maegan Burney and sophomore Dyiamon Robinson belted singles that scored Turbeville.

Priest batted 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, a run batted in and a run scored to lead the East hitters. Robinson finished 2-for-4 with a double, a single and an RBI. Turbeville was also 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Davisson hammered 2 doubles and scored a run. Simmons doubled and scored a run for the Lady Eagles. Burney singled, and Smith drove in a run.

Davisson started and pitched 3.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits, 4 walks and a hit batter, while striking out four. Priest relieved and worked the final 5.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 6 hits, a walk and a hit batter while striking out five.

Hammonds batted 2-4 with a double and 4 RBIs to lead the Whiteville hitters. Edge doubled, scored a run and had an RBI.

East Bladen, now 3-5, will travel to Fairmont Tuesday at 6 p.m. Whiteville improves to 6-1.
