WHITEVILLE – Whiteville avenged an early season loss by defeating East Bladen 13-5 Wednesday in non-conference jayvee baseball action. It was the first loss of the season for the Eagles who are now 5-1.

Whiteville jumped in front 5-0 before the Eagles answered with 2 runs in the 3rd inning. Carson Gooden and Bray Heustess belted singles to start the inning, and Caleb Scruggins slammed a double to left-center field that scored both runners.

After the Wolfpack went up 7-2, Kalec Autry and Lee Barnes smacked singles in the Eagle 4th inning, and Gooden pounded a double to left-center field that scored both runners. Heustess drove in Gooden with a single to right that whittled the lead to 7-5.

Barnes walked in the 5th inning and raced home when Gooden hammered a double to left-center field.

Gooden who started on the mound for East batted 3-for-3 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and 3 runs batted in to lead the Eagle hitters. Autry finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored.

Barnes was 2-for-3 at the plate and scored twice. Heustess batted 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Scruggins smashed the 2-run double, and J’marius Smith added a single.

The Eagle jayvees will travel to East Columbus Thursday for a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
