ELIZABETHTOWN – Bladenboro advanced to the championship game of the Bladen County Middle School Volleyball Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Tar Heel Tuesday by set scores of 25-16 and 25-17.
Bladenboro’s Kimberly Dowless and Tar Heel’s Carrie Jones tallied 2 service points each as the Lady Panthers edged in front 3-2 early. Lily Hester reeled off 4 straight service points to vault the Lady Bulldogs ahead 7-3.
A pair of service points from Janavia Adams rallied Tar Heel to within 7-6. Layla Flores-Garcia tied the set 8-8 with a service point. Karlee Gause smacked in a return winner, and Allison Hickman tallied a service point for an 11-9 Bladenboro lead, but Sherrell McKoy’s service point pulled Tar Heel even at 11-11.
Dowless tipped in a winner then delivered a trio of service points for a 17-12 Lady Bulldog lead. Diyozi McKoy stretched the lead to 22-15 with a trio of service points. Another Dowless tip and a Gause service point helped close out the set.
Tar Heel’s Uriah Wright knocked in 4 straight service points as the Lady Panthers grabbed an early 6-2 lead in the 2nd set. A pair of service points from Katherine Mejia padded the Tar Heel lead to 9-4.
Gause drilled in 5 consecutive service points as Bladenboro edged ahead 10-9. Emma Bordeaux’s service point tied the set for Tar Heel at 12-12.
Halle Nobles ignited a 9-1 Bladenboro spurt with 5 straight service points, and Dowless added a trio service points for a 22-13 Lady Bulldog lead. Emma King tacked on a service point for a 23-14 lead.
Dowless led Bladenboro with 9 service points and 4 tipped winners. Gause and Nobles finished with 6 service points each. Hester and Diyozi McKoy added 4 service points each. King, Allison Hickman and Amiyah Maxfield McCarty had 1 service point each.
Wright topped the Tar Heel scoring with 5 service points. Jones, Mejia, Adams, and Flores-Garcia tallied 2 service points each. Sherrell McKoy and Abigail Dew had 1 service point each.
