Wallace-Rose Hill pulled away with two touchdowns in the final 2:39 of the first half and went on to defeat East Bladen 51-13 in Four County Conference football action Friday night at East.

The Eagles trailed only 10-6 after stopping Wallace-Rose Hill three times on downs in East Bladen territory. However, following an Eagle punt, the Bulldogs drove 65 yards in 11 plays with senior Keyshawn Canady carrying the final 12 yards for the touchdown. Junior Yahir Cano added the extra point for a 17-6 lead at the 2:39 mark.

On East Bladen’s next play, an Eagle fumble was recovered by the Bulldogs’ Javonte Williams and returned 14 yards to the East Bladen 19 yardline. Four plays later Jhonta Wilson used a stiff arm to circle left end from 7 yards out for the touchdown. Cano tacked on the conversion kick for a 24-6 Bulldog lead 48 seconds before halftime.

The Bulldog onslaught continued in the second half as Canady returned a punt 23 yards to the Eagle 24 yardline. Three plays later Wallace senior Johnnie Glaspie bolted 9 yards for the touchdown. Cano added the point for a 31-6 lead with 8:55 left in the third period.

Four plays later Bulldog sophmore Rarkell Simmons scooped up an Eagle fumble and raced 22 yards to the end zone. Cano’s conversion made it 38-6.

The Eagles reached midfield on their next possession, but a fumble on fourth down gave Wallace the ball at the East 43. Bulldog quarterback Aliza Carter tossed a swing pass to Canady who scooted down the right sideline for a touchdown with 4:20 left in the quarter. The conversion kick failed and the lead was 44-6.

Simmons carried twice for gains of 32 and 21 yards on the Bulldogs final touchdown drive. The 21-yarder was for a touchdown, and Cano hit the point after for a 51-6 lead with 9:37 on the clock.

“I didn’t like our response in the second half,” said Eagle Coach Robby Priest. “The defense stayed on the field a lot in the second half. Those turnovers didn’t help.”

After East Bladen’s Michael Walter recovered a Bulldog fumble at the Wallace 36 yardline, the Eagles drove to the end zone in 6 plays. Senior fullback Nikita Owens galloped 16 yards around left end for the touchdown. Junior Jesus Ramos booted the extra point for the final margin with 48 seconds left.

Glaspie finished with 21 carries for 131 rushing yards and a touchdown. Canady rushed 10 times for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Bulldogs racked up 286 yards rushing and 329 total yards.

“They are pretty good,” said Priest. “They get after it and play hard. We didn’t tackle well in the second half, but those are two D-1 running backs.”

Junior Ethan Hines carried 20 times for 83 yards to lead the Eagles. His brother Eian Hines added 45 yards on 16 attempts. East Bladen totaled 146 yards rushing and 153 total.

Wallace-Rose Hill marched 77 yards in 8 plays on their first drive with Canady breaking free for a 30-yard touchdown run. Cano’s kick made it 7-0 at the 9:12 mark.

Ethan Hines took the Bulldog kick-off toward the left sideline and dashed 99 yards for an Eagle touchdown. The extra point kick sailed wide right and the Bulldogs led 7-6 with 8:53 on the clock.

The Eagle defense stopped the next Wallace drive on downs at the Eagle 44. Three plays later a bad snap in punt formation resulted in a 15-yard loss and gave the Bulldogs the ball at the East Bladen 36 yardline.

Two big tackles on third and fourth down by Eagle senior Johnathan Melvin stopped the Bulldogs at the East Bladen 29.  However a fake punt by the Eagles was stopped short at their own 35 and turned the ball back over to Wallace.

A 30-yard run by Canady gave the Bulldogs a first down at the East Bladen five, but Walter dropped Glaspie for a 3-yard loss and the Eagles held again. Cano booted a 26-yard field goal to boost the Bulldog lead to 10-6 with 18 seconds left in the quarter.

Ethan Hines picked up one first down with runs of 9 and 6 yards, and brother Eian popped free for a 17-yard gain as the Eagles drove to the Wallace 37. However a fumbled hand-off was recovered by the Bulldogs’ Broddric Newton to end the threat.

“I knew there was going to be some rust and hiccups with all the people that we had out,” said Coach Priest. “We have got some work to do. We will get better. “

The Eagles are now 3-2 in the league and 7-2 overall and will travel to Union next Friday.
