Bladenboro native Abbey Walters belted a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to drive in the winning run in a 1-0 victory for her UNC-Pembroke Lady Braves Friday night over Kutztown.
The Lady Braves loaded the bases with one out on an error, a bunt single and another single, before Walters ripped the game-winner through the left side.
The victory came in UNC-Pembroke’s season-opener that was also the opening game of the Campbell Oil/Minuteman Invitational presented by Sunoco at LRA Field in Pembroke.
Walters batted 3-4 with the run batted in and also stole a base in her first game as the Lady Braves first baseman.
The West Bladen grad transferred to UNC-Pembroke after playing two years at Southeastern Community College where she was the Region X Player of the Year.
Play continues in the Campbell Oil/Minuteman Invitational Saturday and Sunday. UNC-Pembroke will play Kutztown again at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and will battle Concord at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
