PEMBROKE – West Robeson American defeated Elizabethtown 20-5 Friday night in the opening round of the Dixie Youth Baseball District 9 AAA (Minors) Tournament.

Elizabethtown grabbed a 3-0 first inning lead. Hunter Elks led off with a single but was thrown out at second base. I’keir Murchison belted a single to right-centerfield, and Garrett Dunham smacked a single to right-centerfield. Hunter Smith knocked in Murchison with another single to right-centerfield.

Lee Barnes laced a single to left-centerfield, and Cole Butler raked a single to left that drove in Dunham. Zachary Smith lofted a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Hunter Smith.

West Robeson answered with 9 runs in the bottom of the first. After a scoreless Elizabethtown second, West Robeson tacked on 9 more runs in the bottom of the second to stretch their lead to 18-3.

Elks hammered a double to left-centerfield to begin the Elizabethtown third. Murchison singled to the left side, before Dunham delivered a single to right-centerfield that scored Elks. Barnes ripped a single to centerfield that scored Dunham and trimmed the lead to 18-5.

West Robeson American scored 2 runs in the bottom of the third to end the game on the mercy rule.

Elks batted 2-2 with a double and a run scored. Dunham finished 2-2 at the plate with 2 runs scored. Murchison was 2-2 with a run scored. Barnes batted 2-2 with a run scored.

Hunter Smith cracked a run-scoring single and scored a run. Butler drilled a run-scoring single, and Zachary Smith drove in a run.

Elizabethtown received a bye on Saturday and will play Sunday at 4 p.m. in an elimination game against the winner of Saturday’s game between Lumberton National and West Robeson National.
