NAKINA – A 5-run fourth inning broke open a close game and propelled Elizabethtown to an 11-4 victory over West Robeson American in the opening round of the Dixie Youth Baseball District 2 AAA (Minors) Supplemental Tournament.

Elizabethtown advances to play Bladen County Sunday at 4 p.m. Bladen County received a first-round bye.

Torrean Cogdell led off the Elizabethtown first inning with a single and raced home when Coley Sasser belted a single. Gabe Cashwell knocked in Sasser with a single, and Aa’Quan Cotton smacked a single that scored Cashwell and put Elizabethtown ahead 3-1 after one inning.

Trenton Hughes started the Elizabethtown second inning with a single, and Allister Russ delivered a single that drove in Hughes. Conner Padrick cracked a single that brought home Russ. After Isaiah Lee walked, Conner Padrick scored the third run of the inning that stretched the Elizbethtown lead to 6-4.

After a scoreless third inning, Elizabethtown pulled away with the 5-run fourth. Kalec Autry drew a one-out walk and dashed home when Hughes pounded a single. Russ and Connor Smith drew walks, and Conner Padrick reached base on an infield hit. Hughes, Russ, Smith and Conner Padrick all came around to score runs in the inning.

Cashwell started on the mound for Elizabethtown and picked up the pitching victory. Elizabethtown pitching struck out 5 batters in the game.

Hughes finished 2-2 at the plate with a run batted in and 2 runs scored. Cashwell batted 2-2 with an rbi and a run scored. Conner Padrick was 2-2 with 2 rbi’s and 2 runs scored.

Sasser, Cotton and Russ connected for one rbi single each. Cogdell added a single to the ten-hit Elizabethtown attack. Russ scored 2 runs, and Cogdell, Autry, Sasser and Smith scored one run each.
