Sunday was sunshine with blue skies in Bladen County, which was perfect for the Bladen “Battle of the Badges” Softball Tournament held at the county’s park.

A total of seven teams were signed up to play ball and help raise money to benefit the Bladen County Public Safety Training Center located at White Lake.

Rev. Eckie Lancaster opened the day with a worship service starting at 8:30. With sweet emotion in the air, the crowd was ready for the big day.

After Retired Fire Chief, Jack Cross threw out the first ball, at 9 am, Deejay Danny turned up the tunes and the teams started playing ball.

There were also baked goods, a silent auction, raffle drawings and other ways to help the fundraising events.

The Elizabethtown Fire Department won the tournament with an unbeaten record defeating Grays Creek 4-3 in the championship game. The Elizabethtown team defeated Sampson’s Finest 5-3 to advance to the title game. Sampson’s Finest finished third behind Grays Creek.
