TAR HEEL– Javant McDowell ran for 2 touchdowns to lead Elizabethtown to a 37-0 Bladen Five Middle School Conference football victory over Tar Heel Thursday night.
McDowell carried 8 yards for a first-quarter touchdown and a 6-0 lead. In the second period, McDowell broke loose and galloped 75 yards for a Cougar touchdown. Quarterback Zach Meares kept the ball and ran for the 2-point conversion and a 14-0 lead.
Elizabethtown’s Raymond Autry stripped the ball loose from a Tar Heel runner, and the Cougars gained possession and drove for another touchdown. Meares tossed a 5-yard pass to Ethan Johnson for the touchdown. Victor Garcia kicked the extra point for a 21-0 Cougar halftime lead.
The Panthers mounted a third-quarter drive that reached the Elizabethtown 5 yardline, but the Cougars’ Darius Autry scooped up a Tar Heel fumble and raced 95 yards for a touchdown. Lefrederick Wooten bolted into the end zone for the 2-point conversion and a 29-0 lead.
In the final quarter, Chase Starkloff scooted 45 yards to the Panther 5 yardline. Javanta Matthews charged into the end zone on the next play for the touchdown. Timothy McLean ran the 2-point conversion.
“We capitalized on their fumbles,” said Cougar Coach Rick Whitaker. “Tar Heel played us really tough. I would hate to see them if they had a few more players.”
Elizabethtown remains unbeaten at 3-0 and will travel to Bladenboro Thursday. Tar Heel will host Clarkton School of Discovery Thursday.
