BLADENBORO – With her family, coaches and teammates in attendance Thursday, West Bladen’s Alara Cashwell signed to play her college softball next season at Montreat College.

“It’s a really beautiful campus,” said Cashwell of the Black Mountain school. “I just fell in love with the school and the softball team felt like family to me.” Cashwell plans to major in exercise science.

In two seasons at West Bladen, Cashwell has batted .434 and last season led the Lady Knights in home runs (4), doubles (11) and runs batted in (33). In 2018 she slugged 3 home runs, 19 doubles and drove in 38 runs.

“I am proud of her,” said Lady Knight Coach Pam Stephens. “Alara was a great surprise her sophomore year when she first came to practice. She can play anywhere, and she is a really good girl.”

Alara is the daughter of Michael and Shannon Cashwell. “I am excited,” said Michael Cashwell. “She has been working really hard for this. She really battles on the field and never gives up.”

Montreat Coach Heather Maston was on hand for the signing. “Alara is a great kid with a great work ethic. We have been watching her for it seems like forever – over a year for sure. Alara might see some time behind the plate, but she is so flexible and can play anywhere. Her versatility is very important.”

The Lady Cavaliers finished last season with a 21-26 record and posted an 11-15 mark in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
