Senior Alex Coates came within one out of pitching a no-hitter Monday night, but finished with a one-hit shutout as East Bladen’s Eagles blanked visiting South Robeson 2-0.
Coates gave up a two-out single to Campbell in the seventh inning, walked one and struck out seven batters.
Monday’s game featured dueling one-hitters as South Robeson’s Devin Smith limited the Eagles to one hit and 6 walks, while striking out eight.
East Bladen scored both runs in the bottom of the first inning. With one-out sophmore centerfielder Brooks McGill walked, stole second and third base and darted home on a passed ball. Junior catcher Kyle Tatum walked, stole second and third base then dashed home on a passed ball.
Tatum spoiled Smith’s no-hit with a sixth inning single and finished 1-2 at the plate.
Coach Russell Priest’s Eagles travel to Red Springs Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. game.
