ROSE HILL – Jeremy Hunt struck out 10 in six shutout innings and West Bladen collected 15 hits Tuesday night in beating Union 8-0 in the Four County Conference baseball opener for both teams.

Trent West was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in, a run scored and a pair of doubles to raise his season batting average to .750 to lead the West Bladen offense. Scott Bowen was 3-for-4 with a double, run and RBI. Troy Edge, Donald McCullum and Weston Pidgeon each had two hits. Ray Jones, Jarrett Williams and Hunt each had one hit.

Hunt, Edge and Pidgeon each had an RBI. Jonathan Ashworth and Williams each scored twice while Jones and Edge each crossed the plate once.

Hunt, a right-hander, allowed only a single in the first inning and an infield single in the fifth. He walked three. Bowen pitched the final inning, giving up a walk while striking out one. The Spartans had two runners reach as far as third base.

West Bladen, 2-3 overall and 1-0 in Four County, is scheduled to play at Wallace-Rose Hill on Friday at 7 p.m.

Union remained winless in five games this season.

West Bladen jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jones drew a one-out walk, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on West’s double to deep left field.

The Knights took control in the third inning, scoring four times on six hits for a 5-0 advantage. A single by Williams and double by West put runners on second and third. Hunt then doubled to left-center, scoring Williams and sending West to third base. West then scored on a wild pitch. After the first out, Bowen ripped a double to left that scored courtesy runner Ashworth. McCullum followed with an infield single and Pidgeon singled to left to score Bowen with the final run of the rally.

West Bladen’s final three runs came in the sixth inning. Jones started it with an infield single and Williams reached on an error. The runners advanced a base on wild pitch. West followed with his third base hit that scored pinch-runner Ashworth. After a line out double play, Edge reached on an infield single that drove home Williams. Edge advanced to third base on a pair of wild pitches and scored when Bowen reached on an error.
