Here were some of the stories making news in Bladen County in 1973:
• The Elizabethtown Jaycees held their DSA banquet and made the following awards: Outstanding Young Man of the Year (Mac Campbell, Jr.). Young Farmer of the Year (Steve Carroll). Winfred Johnson Memorial Award to Outstanding Man of the Community over 36 years of age (Rev. Richard G. Wilson).
• Six store windows were damaged by gunfire on Sunday night. All of the facilities were located on NC 87 in the Elizabethtown area: They were The Little Mint, Bank of Elizabethtown, Bank of North Carolina, Clark Tractor and Equipment, Wilbur Register Store and H.S. Johnson Station.
