Staff report

As the date of the highly anticipated solar eclipse approaches, Bladen County Schools is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of its students and staff. In an open letter addressed to parents and guardians, Superintendent Jason Atkinson, Ed.D., provided important information and guidelines for the upcoming celestial event scheduled for Monday, April 8, 2024.

A solar eclipse, a captivating natural phenomenon where the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, will grace the skies on April 8th. Although Bladen County is not in the path of totality, it’s crucial to acknowledge the potential risks associated with viewing the eclipse directly. Looking directly at the sun during an eclipse can lead to serious and permanent eye damage.

To prioritize the safety of students and staff members, Bladen County Schools has decided not to conduct any organized outdoor activities between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM on the day of the eclipse. This precautionary measure aims to prevent any inadvertent eye injuries due to unprotected sun exposure.

While outdoor activities are suspended, some classes may have the opportunity to witness the solar eclipse under controlled conditions, using special glasses designed to safeguard their eyes. Parents whose children’s classes are participating in this activity will receive a permission slip for approval. It is imperative for parents to review, sign, and return the permission slip with their students on Monday, April 8.

In his letter, Dr. Atkinson encourages parents to engage in discussions with their children about the significance of the solar eclipse and the importance of eye safety. By fostering awareness and understanding, families can collectively ensure a safe and educational experience for all students.

As the school district prepares for the solar eclipse, Dr. Atkinson extends his wishes for a safe and rejuvenating spring break to all families. Bladen County Schools eagerly anticipates the return of students on Monday, April 8, where they can continue their educational journey with enhanced knowledge and appreciation for the wonders of the universe.

With safety and education at the forefront, Bladen County Schools remains committed to providing a secure and enriching learning environment for its students, even amidst extraordinary celestial events like the solar eclipse.
