A small group of visitors spent the morning at the BladenOnline.com office on Tuesday morning. Alyssa Hill of Elizabethtown Middle School, Angie Perez of Tar Heel Middle School, Eva Ayala – Martinez and Jose Reyes, both of Tar Heel Middle School spent the morning learning about journalism during their job shadowing.

Together they researched medical vaccines, did a written article, a graphic drawing, produced a sample children’s book and a video.  Alyssa acted as the graphic artist. Angie Perez played the role of editor. Eva Ayala – Martinez was the children’s book author and Jose Reyes was the writer.

Through role playing with guidance from the BladenOnline.com staff, the students were able to learn with hands on experience the different careers offered in the journalism field. The students not only learned different individual journalism roles, but they were also educated about important news topics trending in the healthcare industry.

The job shadowing program, which is part of the Bladen County 4-H program, helps participants learn about the various aspects of different careers and the skills needed to be successful in them. There were 94 students registered for the 2019 Job Shadowing Day in Bladen County. Stacie Kinlaw, Extension Agent, 4-H Youth Development, stated that was a good number of participants.

Kinlaw said, “The way they (the students) qualify is they have to write an essay and each school can choose up to students.”

Star Telephone Membership Corporation sponsored the lunch for the students. Kinlaw stated she also assisted by the CTE Department of Bladen County Schools and Smithfield Foods.

Kinlaw said Bladen Community College assist with providing hosts for the students.
