RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast.
Spring Litter Sweep
Litter continues to be a big problem across our state costing taxpayers millions of dollars each year. The N.C. Department of Transportation holds Litter Sweep twice a year to help clean up trash along our roadways. This year, Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins, put on gloves and joined the effort.
“Litter is a statewide problem, and we need everyone’s help keeping our roads clean and beautiful,” said Secretary Hopkins. “Litter is costly to collect, harms our environment and is an eyesore. Please join us for the Litter Sweep.”

N.C. Traffic Safety Conference
This year’s N.C. Traffic Conference and Expo was held in Greenville. Professionals came together from across the state to share ideas, traffic safety solutions and to showcase their brands and businesses to hundreds of attendees.
The goal of the conference is to consider the issues that lead to severe traffic crashes and come up with solutions to eliminate traffic death and injury.
Senator Stan Bigham Bridge Dedication
Officials with the NCDOT along with state and local officials dedicated the forthcoming bridge on N.C. 49 where Davidson, Rowan, and Stanly counties meet to Senator Stan Bingham.
Bingham began his political career as a Davidson County Commissioner. He went on to serve eight terms in the North Carolina Senate from 2001 to 2016. During his tenure, he introduced and passed 171 bills. He also received many honors and awards, including The Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
Opportunities are Knocking at the Office of Civil Rights
Last week, the Office of Civil Rights hosted an Opportunities Are Knocking workshop at the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe, Inc., in Bolton. NCDOT in partnership with the N.C. Commission of Indian Affairs discussed with individuals and businesses in the area about available contracting opportunities and how to work the agency. For more information, visit ncdot.gov.
