Bladen County is well represented in various competitions at the 150th annual North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh. As of Friday morning, one Bladen County business and two residents had picked up awards for their efforts.

Lu Mil Vineyard brought home several prizes in the Commercial Wine Category. Lu Mil placed second for Muscadine White Blends, third place for their wine Carlos, a third place for their wine Noble, and a third place for their Rose/Blush Wines, and Lu Mil earned a fourth placement for their wine Magnolia.

Hannah Wheeless of Garland earned a first place in the Food Preservation competition in the Junior Category for Ages 9-18 years old in the Preservation category for her Apple Butter; a first place in the Handicrafts and Hobbies category for Adolescent Ages 10-14 years old  for Gourds; and she also earned a first place in the Handicrafts and Hobbies category for Adolescent Ages 10-14 years old for an Original Painting on China.

Hannah Wheeless also earned two Honorable Mentions in the Handicrafts and Hobbies category for decorative painting and for decorative creations miscellaneous.

Taylor Wheeless of Garland earned a second place for the Food Preservation competition in the Junior Category for Ages 9-18 years old for her Blackberry Jam and she also earned a second place for her Grape Jelly—home prepared juice. Wheeless also earned a second place in the Food Preservation competition for the Junior Category for Ages 9-18 years old for her Pepper Jelly/Jam.

In the Handicrafts and Hobbies competition for ages 9 and under, Taylor Wheeless earned a first place for her original decorative painting on China. She also earned a third place in in the Handicrafts and Hobbies competition for ages 9 and under for his Christmas tree ornaments and she earned a fourth place for his Holiday/Occasions Cards. Wheeless also received an Honorable Mention for her entry in Paper Crafts and in the miscellaneous decorations category.

We will have more updates on how our Bladen County residents are doing at the State Fair as more competitions come to a close.
