Over the weekend, Brent Underwood, a husband, father, Bladen Native, and the lead singer of the local band 87&Pine, shared his story from an interesting flight experience on a family vacation. He also told of the National recognition he has received for filming his experience and sharing it online. Underwood has been featured on FOX, NBC, Inside Edition, multiple news articles, and now the Dr. Phil show.

Here is Underwood’s story:

Underwood begins his story with, “So it all started with my family’s first vacation since the pandemic…”

The Underwood family’s flight experience was nothing short of interesting. After flight changes, nearly five hours of waiting on the tarmac due to weather, and a complimentary water bottle and cookie for dinner, tension and impatience were high among flight attendants and passengers.

Underwood stated, “The flight crew was awesome and did their best to keep us comfortable,” however, all passengers did not feel the same. Underwood shared, “A female flight attendant told a male passenger to put his mask on. He started cursing her out, telling her what she could do to him, and called her a “Fat Gorilla.” The lead flight attendant then spoke with the rude passenger, and the problem seemed to be solved. The plane was ready for take-off. As usual, the flight attendants asked passengers to remain seated in preparation for take-off, when a second rude passenger acted out.

Right after the instruction to remain seated, Rude Passenger #2 gets up in an attempt to visit the restroom. The flight attendant then asks the man to take his seat, according to Underwood. He added, “A back and forth started between them, ending with the second passenger calling him a ‘Drama Queen.'”

In Underwood’s words, “This was the attendant’s final straw. He got on the phone with the captain, telling him we’re going back to the gate. His phone call was so loud that we could all hear it, so it got everyone upset. Luckily we didn’t go back to the gate, but out of frustration, the lead flight attendant got on the intercom and shamed the rude passengers for ‘Making this flight a living hell!’ Which made the first rude passenger yell ‘suck my ___’ out multiple times, but luckily no attendant heard it. After waiting another 30 minutes, we took off.”

Underwood’s Dr. Phil Experience:

Underwood stated, “I was approached via email initially by a producer with the show (Dr. Phil). She lined up a phone call, which turned into a pre-interview with a higher-up producer. When he found out I was a musician, we talked for about an hour and a half about a studio he worked for a few years back, how he met Tommy Lee/James Brown, and how he unknowingly found himself on the set of the movie “Friday”! This awesome conversation got me to yet another higher-up producer, and in our short conversation, he asked me to be on the show (Dr. Phil), and next day shipped me a laptop, cameras, and lights!”

August 17th was the big day. Underwood set up his cameras and intentionally chose his outfit, which was his 87&Pine shirt, and customized denim jacket with a patch that reads “Boy From Bladen County.” Underwood’s Bladen County pride is no secret. Unfortunately, he was not allowed to wear his Bladen County merch on the show.

He had a great experience on the Dr. Phil show. He shared a funny highlight from his TV experience with Bladen Online: “When he (Dr. Phil) found out that I work at the DMV, he praised us and said ‘You guys are hated almost as much as the IRS!,’ which got a big laugh from his studio audience.”

Underwood’s appearance has not been aired on the Dr. Phil Show yet, and the air date is not yet determined. However, we will keep our readers updated.
