LAKE WACCAMAW – Juniors Jamar Williams and Tahjir Melvin scored 6 points each in the final period to lift East Columbus to a 55-53 Three Rivers Conference boys basketball victory over West Bladen Friday night.

The Knights took a narrow 34-33 lead into the fourth quarter, but junior Julius Rivera and senior Trey Brown pumped in 4 points each for the Gators who scored 22 points in the period.

Knight senior Tyre Boykin fired in a 3-point shot, 4 other baskets and 2 free throws to rally the Knights. Senior Nijeah McKoy muscled in 2 baskets, and senior Xayvon Davis dropped in a basket.

The Gators made 7 of 13 free throws in the quarter, while the Knights connected on 2 of 6 foul shots. For the game the Gators were 13-25 from the line while West was 6-13.

Melvin led the Gators with 20 points, while Williams and Brown finished with 12 points each. Boykin poured in 35 points for the Knights, and McKoy, Davis, junior Josh Lewis and junior Shy’Ron Adams tallied 4 points each.

Boykin drained a pair of 3-point shots, another basket and 2 free throws in the opening quarter. Adams popped in a basket as the Knights edged in front 12-10.

Two more Boykin baskets and a basket each from Lewis and Davis kept West on top 20-17 at halftime. Boykin racked up 3 baskets and 2 free throws in the third quarter, and Lewis, Adams and Tra’shawn Ballard added a basket each to keep the Knights ahead.

The Knights, now 5-12, will host rival East Bladen Monday night.
