Nurses Week is celebrated internationally each year May 6-12. Locally, Bladen Healthcare invites all nurses-past, present and future- to celebrate a special event during this week. On Thursday, May 10, at 6 p.m. nurses, family and friends are asked to join Bladen Healthcare for the annual Blessing of the Hands and Candlelight Walk. The event will be held at the Nightingale Tree, located at Bladen Healthcare.

This Blessing of the Hands ceremony is a non-denominational, cherished hospital tradition. The blessing provides a spiritual renewal for nurses, linking the art of nursing with the science of nursing practice. Each year we gather to celebrate “our calling” and the unique gifts of each nurse. The Nurses Week Committee has chosen Dr. Pearly Graham-Hoskins to lead the ceremony.

The Candlelight Walk will follow immediately after the Blessing of the Hands ceremony. The event will start at the Nightingale Tree and walk one block around the hospital. Nurses are asked to wear white if possible. Candles will be provided. The walk is a time of remembrance for deceased nurses and to honor our profession and those who came before us. We look forward to seeing retired nurses, students, former Bladen nurses, nurses in our community and nurse friends!

These events are a time of reflection and renewal of our commitment to the nursing profession. Nurses attending these events often remark that it was the highlight of Nurses Week! Both experiences are difficult to explain, for it is felt within the heart.
