This week we reported about a Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Battle of Elizabethtown Chapter, a local civic group, encouraging their members to display blue bows around trees in honor of essential workers during the coronavirus outbreak. Another “thank you” note was published as well written by the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office for a donation of a red bow.

The social media campaign, “Red Bows for Prayer” started across the country, and now has hit Bladen County with force. A simple red bow tied to a tree, fence, mailbox, or post is becoming a symbol of prayer, hope, and unity.

The bows have been seen all across the county. One drive in Elizabethtown has a red bow displayed at every house. Mrs. Cathy Page in Elizabethtown said, “We’ve got red ribbons up and down the street in support and prayer for our community, country and those working to help the people.”

Maurice Williams, owner of Whimsical Florist, has supplied the community with some of the red and blue ribbons. Although his shop is not open to the public to help with the social distancing guidelines, he said he was happy to help with the campaign.

Leta Belle Designs, a florist shop in Bladenboro is also offering their services at this time. They said, “Any way we can help; we are here.”

It’s a stressful time. A lot of fears and concerns are heightened because no one has ever truly dealt with a pandemic in this lifetime.

Sheriff Jim McVicker stated, “As we enter this Easter weekend we are thankful for so many things in our lives.” He added at this time the public needs to look after each other and practice the safety guidelines.

If you would like a bow made to show your support you may contact one of the local businesses offering these services. Whimsical Florist may be reached by phone for bow orders at 910-872-9931. Leta Belle Designs may be reached at 910-862-9350.

As this Easter holiday weekend is celebrated many are making an effort to show support for the frontline workers. The red and blue bow gratitude campaigns are a great way to show support while continuing to practice social distancing guidelines.

Just to list some of those essential workers we made the following list. Healthcare workers and first responders are risking their safety for the health and well being of others. Utility workers continue to make sure our water is clean and our electricity is on. Some restaurants, grocery stores, and food processing workers are taking a hit, but continue to offer their services with added precautions.

Faith-based leaders are thinking outside the box to offer encouragement during the crisis. Bankers, gas stations attendance, small business owners and so many others are striving to provide services while remaining at a safe distance. Home-makers are using their skills to make masks, cook good meals, and calm their loved ones. Educators and Truck Drivers are delivering what we need despite the pandemic.

Some elected officials are working extra hours to offer citizens assistance. Construction workers are responsible for building homes and other facilities keeping us safe and comfortable. Media outlets are sifting through changing information striving to bring truth to others.

The list goes on and on. May we focus on the good, while we observe and acknowledge the crisis with care and concern for others.
