D. J. Mason Scores 16 In Campbell Win At CharlotteClarkton native D. J. Mason recorded a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds Thursday as his Campbell Camels knocked Winthrop out of first place in the Big South Conference Thursday with a 90-83 victory in Rock Hill, SC.

The Camels improved to 2-1 in the Big South and 8-5 overall. The Camels are now tied for third-place in the league behind unbeaten High Point and UNC-Asheville.

Mason connected on 4 of 9 shots from the field, but hit 2 of his 3 three-point attempts. The 6-6 senior also had 2 steals and an assist.

A Mason rebound basket kept the Camels within 6-5 early in the game. Later in the half, the West Bladen grad nailed a 3-point shot, then grabbed an offensive rebound that led to a Chris Clemons’ 3-ball and a 30-18 Campbell lead 7:12 before halftime.

The Camels led 36-27 at halftime, and Mason dropped in a lay-up early in the second half to push the margin to 40-30.

Mason fired in a 3-pointer with 8:55 left in the game that gave Campbell a 68-57 lead.

The Camels will host Presbyterian Saturday at 4 p.m. in another Big South game.
